As a third-generation contractor, JG Grading & Landscaping delivers full-service site prep — grading, clearing, driveways, pads, and ponds — built on experience, integrity, and a satisfaction guarantee.
Site preparation is not just clearing a spot and pushing dirt around. It is the work that gets a property ready for what comes next — whether that is a house, shop, barn, building pad, driveway, private road, pond area, farm use, or a larger development project.
At JG Grading & Landscaping, we handle site preparation across Central and Eastern North Carolina for homeowners, landowners, farms, builders, and rural properties. Every site is different, but the goal is the same: look at the whole property, figure out the right order of work, and get the site opened up, shaped, drained, stabilized, and ready to move forward.
Before we start, we look at the layout, access, slopes, elevations, soil conditions, drainage, clearing limits, proposed building areas, driveway routes, and how the property is going to be used. We may use lasers, drone photos, Google Earth layouts, site measurements, and on-site evaluation to help understand how everything ties together. A driveway, building pad, drainage pipe, erosion control, and final grade all affect each other, so they need to be thought through before the machines start running.
Depending on the project, the work may start with clearing trees, brush, stumps, and vegetation so the site can be accessed and laid out better. From there, debris may be stacked, hauled off, burned on site where allowed, or handled in whatever way makes the most sense for that job and property.
Erosion control also matters. On many jobs, silt fence, construction entrances, temporary stabilization, or other erosion control measures need to be installed before major grading starts. That helps keep the site cleaner, helps control runoff, and keeps the project moving in the right direction.
Once the site is opened up and protected where needed, we can move into the dirt work. That may include rough grading, cutting and filling, balancing material on site, shaping house lots, building pads, driveways, private roads, parking areas, slopes, ditches, swales, and drainage paths. If pipe work is needed, we can install driveway pipes, culverts, drainage pipes, and other drainage improvements as part of the site preparation process.
We can also help lay out a practical work plan for the portion of the project we are handling. That does not mean an engineered site plan or stamped drawing. It means we can help think through access, clearing limits, driveway routes, pad areas, drainage, dirt movement, erosion control, and the order the work needs to happen in. If the project requires an engineered plan, survey, permit drawings, or stamped design work, we can help point you toward the right people.
Whether it is a homeowner getting land ready for a house, a farm needing access opened up, a builder needing a site prepared, or a landowner trying to figure out the best way to use a property, we try to look at the whole picture. We are not there just to move dirt. We are there to get the site ready in a way that makes sense, works with the land, and gives the next phase a better place to start.
Site Evaluation & Work Planning — Looking at the property, access, slopes, drainage, elevations, soil conditions, clearing limits, proposed building areas, driveway routes, and the order the work needs to happen in.
Clearing, Grubbing & Debris Handling — Clearing trees, brush, stumps, vegetation, and rough areas so the site can be accessed and used. Depending on the job, debris may be stacked, hauled off, burned on site where allowed, or handled in the most practical way for the property.
Erosion Control & Construction Access — Installing silt fence, construction entrances, temporary stabilization, or other erosion control measures where needed before major grading starts.
Rough Grading & Dirt Balancing — Cutting high areas, filling low areas, shaping the site, moving dirt where it needs to go, and balancing material on site when possible instead of hauling dirt for no reason.
Drainage & Pipe Installation — Installing driveway pipes, culverts, drainage pipes, ditches, swales, and other drainage improvements so water has somewhere to go instead of creating problems later.
Building Pads, House Lots & Shop Pads — Preparing areas for homes, barns, shops, garages, sheds, farm buildings, or other structures with grade, elevation, access, drainage, and usability in mind.
Driveways, Private Roads & Parking Areas — Building or preparing gravel driveways, private roads, access routes, construction entrances, and parking areas so the property can be reached and used properly.
Final Grading, Seed, Straw & Stabilization — Cleaning up disturbed areas, shaping final grades where needed, and stabilizing the site with seed, straw, or other erosion control methods when the dirt work is complete.
On bigger site preparation jobs, we do not like going into it blind. Before equipment starts moving dirt, we want to understand the property as much as possible. That means looking at access, property lines, drainage, slopes, elevations, existing roads, clearing limits, building areas, pipe locations, and how the whole site is supposed to come together.
We use tools like Google Earth Pro, LandGlide, contour maps, drone photos, aerial images, lasers, and on-site measurements to help lay things out and think through the job. Sometimes that means drawing proposed driveways, building pads, clearing limits, drainage areas, silt fence, pipe crossings, haul routes, or work zones so the customer can better understand what we are talking about.
We can put together practical site layouts and marked-up maps for the work we are performing. These are not engineered plans or stamped drawings, and they are not meant to replace a surveyor, engineer, or permit drawing when one is required. But they do help everyone get on the same page before the work starts.
That is a big part of being transparent. When a project has multiple pieces — clearing, erosion control, access, drainage, grading, building pads, driveways, private roads, seeding, strawing, or debris handling — the order matters. We want the customer to understand what is included, what is not included, what may need to happen first, and where the money is going.
Our estimates are usually broken down by sections of the job so it is easier to see what each part covers. We would rather take the time upfront to explain the work than leave somebody guessing after the equipment shows up.

Get clear answers about site preparation, clearing, grading, drainage, erosion control, building pads, access, and what to expect before the dirt work starts.
Site preparation can include a lot more than just clearing a spot and pushing dirt around. Depending on the property, it may involve laying out the work, clearing trees and brush, grubbing stumps, stripping topsoil, stacking or hauling off debris, installing erosion control, building access, rough grading, balancing dirt, installing drainage pipes, shaping building pads, building driveways, and stabilizing disturbed areas with seed and straw. Every job is different. Some sites only need a small area cleaned up and graded. Others need clearing, access, drainage, roads, pads, erosion control, and final stabilization all tied together. That is why we like to look at the whole property before acting like we already know the answer.
The order matters because doing things backwards can cost time and money. You do not want to final grade an area before the clearing is done, install stone before drainage is handled, or start moving dirt without thinking about erosion control and water flow. On most jobs, we start by looking at the site, figuring out access, marking or understanding the work areas, clearing what needs to be cleared, handling debris, installing erosion control where needed, and then moving into grading, drainage, pads, roads, driveways, and stabilization. The exact order depends on the property, but the point is simple: every step needs to make sense before the next one starts.
Yes. We can help lay out a practical plan for the work we are doing. We use things like Google Earth Pro, LandGlide, drone photos, contour maps, lasers, and on-site measurements to help look at access, slopes, drainage, clearing limits, building areas, driveway routes, pipe locations, and how the site needs to come together. That does not mean we are replacing an engineer, surveyor, or stamped site plan when one is required. But for the dirt work we are performing, we can help the customer see what we are talking about, understand the layout, and get a better idea of what needs to happen before the equipment starts moving.
Yes. On many site preparation jobs, clearing and debris handling are part of the first steps. That may include cutting and clearing trees, brush, overgrowth, stumps, roots, and rough areas so the site can be accessed and worked. Depending on the job and what is allowed, debris may be stacked, hauled off, burned on site, chipped, or handled in the most practical way for the property. We can also install silt fence, construction entrances, seed, straw, and other erosion control or stabilization measures where needed. The goal is to keep the job moving while also keeping the site cleaner and better controlled.
The biggest thing is to know that site prep touches everything. The driveway, building pad, drainage, access, clearing limits, pipe locations, material movement, and final grade all tie together. If one part is planned wrong, it can create problems later. Before starting, it helps to know what you are trying to build, where you want access, where structures may go, what areas need to be cleared, and whether there are any known property lines, septic areas, wells, utilities, easements, or drainage concerns. If you do not have all of that figured out yet, that is fine. We can look at the property with you, talk through the options, and help figure out a practical plan for the work.

Real experiences from our customers.
I have a small lot in the River Ridge campground that I recently purchased that needs some grading and landscaping work done to prepare for a garage. I called many local businesses that took my message and never called back, or the ones I talked to never showed up to give me an estimate on the work I needed done. When I came across JG Grading & Landscapings ad I read about the history and life story how they made their business so successful by honest hard work and satisfying customers needs. When I called, John answered and told me he was going to be in my area in a couple of days he'd be glad to come out and give me a estimate on the work I needed. When he arrived he was very professional and polite nice person to talk with. He looked my lot over and told me he couldn't give me estimate at this time because of not knowing the exact property lines, my fault for not having a survey done beforehand. He spend quite a bit of his time looking walking checking the grade difference explaining everything. I really appreciated him coming out and I hope he can come back soon now I've had property surveyed. I'll give part 2 of my review once work has been completed. Thank you John.
We recently had the pleasure of working with John from JG Grading and Landscaping, and we couldn’t be more satisfied with the service we received. From the very start, John took the time to meet us on-site and truly listen to our needs. He provided professional advice on what should and shouldn’t be done, without trying to upsell unnecessary services. What really stood out was how John offered us several options, including more budget-friendly alternatives. He walked us through the pros and cons of each option, giving us all the information we needed to make an informed decision. His honesty and transparency made us feel confident in our choices. John was also a pleasure to work with—very personable, approachable, and always willing to go the extra mile to ensure everything was perfect. We highly recommend his services to anyone in need of grading or landscaping work. We’re thrilled with the results and will definitely be calling him again for future projects!
