From Henderson roots to decades of grading & excavation experience — a family tradition carried forward into the future.
JG Grading & Landscaping is more than a company name — it’s the continuation of a family tradition that began right here in Henderson, North Carolina. For 43 years, my granddaddy, Robert “Bobby” Glover, built and ran Glover Grading & Glover Landscape Supply. He started out with residential landscaping and smaller grading projects, but over time the work grew. What began with lawns and driveways evolved into ponds, site development, and eventually full-scale commercial excavation projects.
As his reputation spread, Glover Grading became known well beyond Henderson. By the later years of his career, most of the company’s work was for general contractors on commercial sites in Raleigh, Durham, Cary, and Chapel Hill, though he always kept ties to local homeowners and farms. His business was built on faith, hard work, and honesty — principles that earned trust across both residential and commercial clients.
In 2013, my granddaddy faced the toughest moment of his career. Coming out of a difficult economy, he took on a major project that he hoped would put the company back on the map. Instead, it became the turning point that forced him to close the doors. He gave everything he had — his time, his energy, his resources — to keep things going for his employees and his customers, but when the dust settled, the company he had poured his life into came to an end.
After 43 years in business, that marked his retirement. For me, as a kid, it was one of the hardest things to watch. My granddaddy had built something incredible and given his whole life to it, and then in what felt like the blink of an eye, it was gone. That experience shaped me deeply. It taught me how fast things can change, how important it is to stand firm in faith, and how much resilience it takes to keep going when life throws you setbacks.
Watching my granddaddy close the doors on a business he had poured his life into left a mark on me. It felt like a chapter in our family’s story had ended too soon — like a piece of me was missing. I knew deep down that one day I would have to carry that chapter forward.
By the time I was in high school, I was already making plans to start my own path in this work. I could have chosen another direction in life, but this industry is what I grew up around, and it’s what I loved. More than that, I wanted to make my granddaddy proud by carrying forward what he had worked so hard to instill in me — a love for the land, a respect for people, and pride in a job well done.
The work ethic and respect my granddaddy instilled in me from a young age are irreplaceable. Looking back, I wouldn’t change my story or where we came from. We all have a story, but it’s about how we continue writing the book — and for me, that means carrying forward what he taught me.
He always told me that one thing you can’t buy in life is work ethic. From the time I was a boy, he showed me that hard work, honesty, and respect were worth more than anything. He shaped me into the man I am today and gave me a drive that people sometimes don’t understand for my age.
But it wasn’t just about working hard — it was about keeping your word. My granddaddy always told me, “A man has nothing in life but his word. And once that’s broken, what does he have?” I was raised on the belief that a handshake is a promise, and a promise is something you keep. Those values guide me to this day, both in life and in business.
Another lesson my granddaddy taught me was that this work is not about chasing dollars — the money comes with the work, but it’s never the whole picture. What truly matters are the connections you build along the way.
From a young age, he showed me that every customer should be treated like more than just a transaction. You develop a relationship, not just a job. When someone becomes your customer, they become part of your extended family. That’s how he approached business, and it’s how I approach it today.
At JG Grading & Landscaping, I want every customer to feel like family — to know we care about their land and their project the same way we’d care for our own. Because at the end of the day, it’s not just dirt being moved or a job being finished — it’s a relationship built on trust, respect, and care.
Today, with JG Grading & Landscaping, I continue what he started. We still serve the people of Henderson and surrounding counties with the same principles of honesty, reliability, and hard work, while also partnering with contractors on larger commercial jobs across the region. The name on the sign may be different, but the standards, values, and pride remain the same.
Just like my granddaddy taught me, this business is about more than machines and dirt. It’s about:
Honoring God in all we do
Carrying forward our family legacy
Building stronger communities through every project
Those values aren’t just words — they’re the way we run this business every single day. That’s the Glover family legacy, and that’s the foundation JG Grading & Landscaping is proud to carry forward into the future.
Every project we take on is another chapter in the Glover family legacy — built on faith, hard work, and lasting relationships. When you choose us, you’re not just getting a contractor; you’re becoming part of the story we’ve been writing for generations.
